It was fantastic as a Triumph! In fact I'd go as far as saying that it was one of the best Triumphs mainly becuase so little of it came from BL. My Mum had one when I was growing up, a 1982 Acclaim HL in white.
Everything but the badge was Honda. All the brits did was tack on more "luxuries" and call it done. My family always had crap cars, and that was the only one that didnt go onto a scrap yard after we had it.

Not a Triumph, not by a long shot. Rebadged Honda made to squeeze a last buck out of a company that had been systematically ruined by a bloated behemoth of a company.
They should have left well alone with the British motor industry. Left Leyland the relatively small, dynamic company owning Triumph and Rover and let BMC bankrupt itself. That way Leyland could pick over the remains of BMC for anything profitable/useful. Jaguar, MG and the Mini (and it's creator Issigonis) spring to mind. The rest can be bought up by the government if they really wanted to save jobs.
That way you end up with a company that houses the best of all British automobile manufacturing under one roof. Rover, Triumph, Jaguar, MG and the Mini. Small, manageable and flexible. A company that actually stands a chance of succeeding in the global marketplace.
Oh, and I had an idea that would likely have solved a lot of BL's industrial disputes (which weren't take seriously by BL management). Quality-based bonuses. They could have sorted out their workers' pay disputes and their quality problems in one fell swoop.
They couldn't afford to pay their workers more based on their current profits. Their profits were hamstrung by buyers put off by poor build quality, especially abroad.
So, offer workers a bonus based on their ability/willingness to put together a car properly. If your bit passes quality control (which will be much more stringent), you get a bigger pay packet.
Hey presto :) well put together cars and a happier workforce...
Well, looks like a rambled a bit off the topic there. Happens when I get onto the topic of BL :S

Ballade is a booted Civic? My Aunt still has her 414 which I understand is a Concerto crossbreed.
I'm never quite sure what to call that era of Honda/Rover: Hovers? Rondas?

Yes, the Ballade name was used at the time. Concerto was used for subsequent models.
Here's the next Ballade, you can see it's the same as the 213.
